Running appraisal conversations

Two-day seminar for managers: preparing, structuring and reviewing appraisal conversations, with role plays on real cases.

The appraisal conversation is the appointment many managers postpone longest. Usually it comes down to the two or three moments where it gets uncomfortable.

This seminar works on those moments. Participants bring their own upcoming conversations, we build them and run them. The role plays are recorded so that afterwards we can talk about concrete moments rather than about what people remember.

Content and modules

  1. Preparation: reason, goal, documents, and what the other side learns beforehand
  2. Structure: from the opening through the stocktake to the agreement
  3. Separating observation from judgement: feedback that lands
  4. Goals and development steps: set together, written so progress is visible
  5. The hard moments: objection, silence, emotion, the question about money
  6. Role plays with recording: real cases, review in the small group
  7. Transfer: preparing your next conversation, with a date

What you take away

  • A structure that works under time pressure
  • Wording for the moments that get uncomfortable
  • Your own effect from the recording rather than from guesswork
  • One prepared conversation for the week after
  • Confidence with objection and emotion

Still unsure?

Tell me where things are stuck right now.

A first conversation costs nothing. Afterwards you know whether consulting, a training or coaching fits your situation, and whether we fit each other.
