Presenting and PowerPoint

One-day seminar: storyline, slide titles that state the point, slide master and data slides. You leave with a finished deck.

Most presentations fail before the first slide, on the question of what should stick. So the morning runs without computers: we look at what convinces an audience, how a storyline comes together and how a slide title turns into a statement.

In the afternoon participants build their own deck from a real text of their organisation and develop it across the day. I show the software steps on the projector, the work happens on your own machine.

Content and modules

  1. What convinces: analysing weak examples in small groups
  2. Storyline: building by topic, pyramid and funnel, what to do with the agenda
  3. Action titles: the title states the point, not the topic
  4. Building your own deck: structure and titles from a real text
  5. Working efficiently: aligning, distributing, duplicating, shortcuts
  6. Consistent slides: slide master, layouts, design settings
  7. Showing data: making the point visible at a glance, bringing in tables and charts
  8. Final polish: restrained animation, transitions, presenter view

By the end participants can

  • State the core message in one sentence and build the slides around it
  • Check a presentation against audience and goal and set the storyline
  • Build slides pyramid style, message first, evidence second
  • Write action titles
  • Prepare data and charts so the point is visible immediately
  • Use master and layouts for consistency and speed
